Yosuzi, meaning “Cactus Flower” in the Wayuunaiki dialect, is a fashion brand founded by Yosuzi Sylvester that celebrates rare artisanal skills from her ancestral Wayuu Indian community in Venezuela.
The first collection, entitled "Waleker" launched in 2014 with one-of-a-kind Wayuu inspired hats. Colourful and fresh in spirit, the collection stays true to the Wayuu Indian's use of primitive shapes and primary colours whilst combining a modern sensibility.
The collection pays homage to the the mythological figure called "Waleker", a spider disguised as a little girl believed to have taught the Wayuu's how to weave.
Each hat takes a Wayuu Indian Artisan man eight hours to weave by hand and is made from 100% Iraka Palm Straw.
These unique creations inspired by indigenous cultural traditions seek to cultivate the next generation of master artisans amongst the Wayuu Indians and further promote prosperity in their communities. They are made for someone who values a handmade product and the soul behind the craft.
"The Wayuu Hat Project" is our give-back initiative, which partners with independent non-profit organisation, CEPIN, committed to feeding, clothing and teaching Wayuu Indian children in need.
